The hymn, 'When I survey the wondrous cross' is one of the best, deepest and most poetic lyrics ever written. Even over 300 years after it was written it is still being sung, more or less as Isaac Watts wrote it in 1707. So, why would anyone need to re-write or paraphrase it, and set it to a new tune, for a modern congregation? It's a fair question. But it still didn't stop me ...
