At the end of a creative writing session, I took a moment to reflect on the experiences I'd had in the weeks previously, the big headlines [and the not so popular ones] that had caught my attention in the news, the conversations where ongoing questions and disappointment, the weeping and struggle with illness, were being expressed by friends and family. It wasn't long before the prayer 'Lord have mercy' began to form in my prayers and in my initial improvisations around the song.

This song is a call to worship which reminds us that though we come from diverse circumstances, we join together to worship as the family of God. The song is designed to make room for us to name our individual circumstances in extemporary prayer, and then call on God together with the refrain. Sing the refrain to start. The leader then invites people to pray extemporary prayers that begin "Lord, I come…" to name their circumstances. The whole group joins to repeat the refrain after each set of prayers.

During the last 12 months I've run songwriting workshops on both sides of the globe. In each workshop we try to model song-critiquing and collaboration, and I always take along something I'm working on. This is the song I've shared with several groups this past year. Their collective thoughts, observations and constructive suggestions have all contributed to this finished song. It's been hard work, trying to stick closely to essence of the psalm while keeping a simple structure and rhyme scheme, and it's taken many weeks and many miles to get there. Thank you to everyone who's played a part! I hope it will be prove a lively, joyful and humble call to worship our great creator God.

Jesus’ resurrection has world-transforming implications! I’ve been co-writing a book with my wife, Sara, about Whole Life Worship. One of the things which struck us is that the resurrection of Christ is so often only spoken about in songs as having an impact on the individual worshipper. I don’t ever want to lose this personal connection. But in Ephesians, for example, I think we see at least three levels of impact: on an individual level, resurrecting us from the death of sin and guilt (Ephesians 2:1–10); on a relational level between us as humans (2:11–18); and on a cosmic level, the unification of ‘all things in heaven and on earth under Christ’ (1:10). I got so excited about this I wanted to try and write a song/hymn about it, so here it is.

The incarnation is such a mind-blowing and humbling truth – that the Son of God should give up his place of honour with the Father to become God’s servant on earth – all to rescue us. What amazing love that he would lay aside his glory and status and instead choose the road to the cross, suffering for our sake. Jesus, in displaying such humility, glorified God and lifted others up, and these verses from Philippians 2 encourage us to have the same servant attitude as Christ in our lives. because of this supreme humility God has exalted Jesus to the highest place, deserving of all worship, honour and praise.
