In the Psalms, Zion is not merely a name for Jerusalem, but a poetic reference to the place where God dwells, and where his blessing is available to his people. While the blessing is all from God, we do not receive it passively, but reach out for it actively in trust and obedience. Joy and peace begin in the fear of God, following Jesus in all our endeavors. As we trust God to provide, he will restore us in his time: individually, in our families, and in his kingdom to come.
THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law." Galatians 5: 22-23
Many years ago when I was trying to memorize this passage I noticed that the last six fruits of the Spirit began with the letters P, K, G, F, G and S. From those letters I created the memory aid, "PacKaGe of FiGS" and it has worked for me every since! Recently I thought of putting that memory aid into a little song, and this is the result!
This song compares the confusion, blindness, and despair of a life without Jesus to the belief and hope that come from accepting Him.
This psalm divides in two halves, each about God restoring the fortunes of his people. The first recalls a great surprise in their past that even the surrounding nations noticed. The second looks to the future during a time of hard work and weeping, asking God to restore their fortunes again. Central to the psalm is the hopeful refrain: “the Lord has done great things for us; we are glad.” Whether laughing or weeping, in recalling God’s goodness, we can hope in the Lord.
This is a song about pressing in to God and following even when things get tough. Its a song of determination and faith based around 2 Cor 4:7-9 "7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." and Phil 3: 12-14 "12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus."
Based on Psalm 9, this song of praise highlights a number of the characteristics of God - it was written during my first online UA Resound Songwriting retreat in June 2020.
