Distress is a significant part of our experience. As God's people we are often surrounded by hostile enemies, base falsehoods, and injustice. At the outset of these Psalms of Ascent, the pilgrim feels the force of this distressing context and pleads with the Lord for help. With honesty about life’s struggles and a persistent choice to hope in God, these songs of pilgrimage to Jerusalem trace our own journey to the heavenly city.
If you take a good look at the incredible world that God has created it's kind of hard not to feel a rising sense of gratitude and joy. The world really is remarkable and filled with beauty - we only really have to take a moment to stop and notice it. This song came from one of those moments. I was walking the dog on a gloriously sunny day, blue skies, green grass, listening to a chord sequence James had sent me for a co-write, and my heart began to overflow with the beauty of the day. I began writing the chorus as I walked and the song grew from there. When I sing it I'm transported back to that beautiful day and am filled again with the delight of that moment and thankfulness to God for what is available to us, right on our doorsteps.
Pilgrimage involves confronting the unknown. We realize that we are not in control of outcomes. On his journey, walking through remote wilderness, the pilgrim considers where to look for help. In this psalm he recounts many ways that God is his helper and Guardian, even in times of doubt or pain. God’s sovereign power in creation and his steadfast love for his people are our sure hope of safety.
A raw demo recording of a song inspired by a world where there is so much striving for material possession and validation from people and the only way we can be truly fulfilled is to know Jesus and have that relationship. A freedom which came at the ultimate cost paid by Christ on the cross.

"Emmanuel" isn't just for Christmas. We often use this name for God when referring to Jesus being born as a man on Earth, hence why it's more commonly used in the run-up to Christmas. But God has always been with us, and will continue to be with us by His Spirit.
My wife and I wrote this song as part of the 12 Song Challenge for 2024.

This is a song written with my wonderful friend Keiko Ying. It was an attempt to write one of those simple songs of worship in the vein of those Cutting Edge and early Matt Redman songs that so impacted many of us back then!
I'm really pleased with how it turned out and the amazing job Keiko did getting the lyrics 'just right'.

Written as part of 2024's 12 Song Challenge, where the theme was "commitment songs". The song is based on John 15, where Jesus talks about us being branches on the vine.
This is a great song to sing as a congregation. A declaration of who we are in Christ and a real celebration. I imagined a parade processing down a street with banners and loud shouts of praise. Works well with just guitar and vocal too.
