THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT - "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such there is no law." Galatians 5: 22-23 Many years ago when I was trying to memorize this passage I noticed that the last six fruits of the Spirit began with the letters P, K, G, F, G and S. From those letters I created the memory aid, "PacKaGe of FiGS" and it has worked for me every since! Recently I thought of putting that memory aid into a little song, and this is the result!
This is my first song posting and it is a collaboration with Terry Young as a co-write and friends form the Resound 12 Song Challenge as "Ebberstonia" who helped to perform the song. The song was written out of the Resound 12 Song Challenge as a "remake" of the old Rock of Ages. Whilst distinctly different it nods to the original in shape, structure and sentiment. Resound Worship’s 12 Song Challenge this month was to take inspiration from the great creeds of the church. I was at the annual Resound Worship Songwriters’ Retreat at Wydale Hall in Yorkshire, UK so had plenty of time to reflection, and I took inspiration from the Nicene Creed. Pairing up with the very talented Sue Crossman of Hopestream Worship, we came up with this. Each verse focusses on expanding, in language simple enough for children, each person of the Trinity. Since writing it, we’ve used it regularly in our Sunday School and family services and it’s a hit with young and old alike.

This song is taken from the book of Ruth, chapter 1, and might be used at services where this scripture is a focus, as a closing hymn or for weddings/celebrations of life partnerships. The song was originally written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a couple who had used this scripture passage at their wedding.
