From a star in the sky to a shepherd in the field, the Christmas story is defined by choices. 'A Night Just Like This' invites you to look beyond the manger scene and make a choice of your own. Will you see Him only as a baby, or will you choose to accept Him as the King who gave His life for you?
This is a song written with my wonderful friend Keiko Ying. It was an attempt to write one of those simple songs of worship in the vein of those Cutting Edge and early Matt Redman songs that so impacted many of us back then!
I'm really pleased with how it turned out and the amazing job Keiko did getting the lyrics 'just right'.
Thanks also to Reuben and Eve who drummed and sang on the recording and made it much nicer to listen to!
I love fast songs that have substance, so that was my aim in writing this song. It speaks about the different aspects of Jesus, from creation of the world to dying on a cross, from his unknowableness to his intimate love for us. Works well as a song to wake a congregation :)
I wrote this song while listening to a friend, Fusi Mokoena, preach to our church on the topic of "zeal". The first two lines of the song, along with the melody, dropped into my head and the rest of the song flowed from that point. I completed it with the help of the 12 Song Challenge community, as part of the April 2024 challenge.
The song is a basic 12-bar blues in C with a twist. But every verse you add another four bars, and another couplet to the lyrics, from a simple refrain all the way to a full-on recollection of the story of the Magi.
A song based on Acts 4, where Peter says the words "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved." The whole song is written around salvation being found in Jesus alone.
I started writing it as part of the 12 Song Challenge in 2024, where the theme was "Acts songs", i.e. a song based on a part of the book of Acts.
The recording was created (mostly) live, with only the lead guitar part being recorded separately.
A song to ignite memories of child-like excitement about Christmas and transform them into awe-filled wonder, focusing on the transforming work of Christ that begun with his earthly birth.
