Hymn

‘All things come from you, and of your own do we give you’ - referencing this prayer often used in our church, this song expresses our thanks for all God is and has given us, but also pledges our response of generosity. Written for the Resound 12 Song challenge 2020, this is one I come back to in many circumstances.

This song is taken from the book of Ruth, chapter 1, and might be used at services where this scripture is a focus, as a closing hymn or for weddings/celebrations of life partnerships. The song was originally written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of a couple who had used this scripture passage at their wedding.
John 11:35, the shortest verse in the Bible, it the theme running through this song. I expanded on this verse referring to the death of Lazarus, to cite other examples when Jesus wept, drawing from other gospels as well - the birth of Jesus (Luke 2), Jesus weeping for Jerusalem (Luke 13:34-35) and the death of Jesus (Matt. 27:50, Mark 15:39), and Psalm 30:5 as well. The style of the music is related to plainsong/chant, of course with some modern twists!

From our recent teaching series on Hebrews, this song highlights four passages which affirm we can draw near to Jesus, our great High Priest, for help in our time of need. In response, as a royal priesthood, we are called to bless others in his name. Written for the Resound 12 Song Challenge 2024.
